I'm getting crushed
Power comes from your dragons and your tactics, not from the number of troops. Here's what to do, without paying:

Composition first: a Champion at the Center (it reduces damage for the whole army), and a single troop type (pikemen, archers, cavalry or shields) on which your dragons have a GREEN affinity — in green they're stronger, you see it in the Army Builder.

Target too tough? Send several waves: the defender doesn't recover its troops between your attacks.

Raise your dragons' level by farming the right targets (beasts, knights, wild dragons = big XP).

Raise your hitters' habits: Cores can be farmed and it's permanent.

Push research: damage of your troop type, then defense.

Good to know: Stars strengthen everything, but cost enormous amounts of relics (often via real money or a very big grind): useful over time, not today's priority.
