Troop affinities and types: green, red and the triangle

Each army carries a single troop type. The right choice depends on your dragons first, long before the opponent.

Updated September 24, 2026

One troop type per army

The troop type is chosen per army: all three dragons carry the same one. There are four combat types: Cavalry, Pikemen, Archers and Shields. Siege is for buildings, not for dragon battles.

The type is set in advance: you can only change it at your stronghold or in a garrison. Better to arrive ready.

Affinity: +20% or −20% on the dragon's stats

Each dragon has affinities per troop type. A green affinity gives +20% to the dragon's stats when it carries that type. A red affinity cuts them by 20%. A type that is neither green nor red is neutral.

Siege affinity has no effect in dragon battles: you never put siege troops on a fighting dragon.

  • Look for the type that is green for the most dragons in your trio.
  • Keep your dragons out of red: they lose a fifth of their stats.
  • A type that is green for two dragons out of three is often worth more than a “meta” type.

The troop triangle: ±7%

Troop types beat each other in a loop: Cavalry beats Shields, Shields beat Archers, Archers beat Pikemen, and Pikemen beat Cavalry. The advantage is worth about 7%.

It's real, but it's small. And against a target whose troops you don't know, you can't aim for it. Green affinity (+20%) and your troop upgrades weigh far more.

What really matters, in order

  • Your troop type's upgrades (damage and defense): by far the biggest lever.
  • Your dragons' green affinity for that type: +20% stats.
  • The capital bonus: a capital held by your faction can give +5% to a troop type.
  • The triangle against the opponent: ±7%, only if you know what they play.

The composer accounts for all of this, capitals included: it tests the four types for each trio and keeps the one that wins the most battles.

Let the AI do the maths

The composer plays the battles with your real dragons (levels, stars, Habits, Heirlooms) and gives you your 5 best armies, placement and troop included.
