Placing your dragons: the Center and the flanks

Three seats, and the Center is the Vanguard

Every army has exactly three seats: left flank, Center, right flank. With five armies, that makes fifteen seats. The “Vanguard” mentioned in the game's descriptions is not a fourth seat: it is the name the game gives to the Center.

The Center is the heart of the army. The Vanguard ability triggers there, and many effects that strengthen allies come from that dragon.

The Vanguard ability: two conditions

Every dragon has its own Vanguard ability. There are eight of them, two per breed. It only applies when two conditions are met: the dragon is in the Center, and it is at least level 16. Below level 16, a dragon in the Center brings nothing from this ability, neither to itself nor to its neighbours.

Some Vanguard abilities also strengthen a specific ally, on the left or the right flank. The dragon that benefits has to be in the right seat.

• Put a level 16+ dragon in the Center whose Vanguard ability serves your army.
• Check which flank gets the bonus, and place the dragon that gains the most there.
• A weak dragon under level 16 is better on a flank than in the Center.

Flanks and targeted lanes

Commands and Habits don't hit just anyone. Depending on the ability, it hits an enemy in the same lane, an enemy in a neighbouring lane, or an enemy in any lane. A dragon that strikes “the same lane” depends directly on who stands in front of it.

That's why the same trio can win or lose depending on the order in which the three dragons are placed.

How to find the best placement

For a given trio, there are six ways to place the three dragons and four possible troop types. Testing all twenty-four combinations by hand isn't realistic.
